June 27th Meeting and Beyond
24/06/2010 by Barry.
The last proper weekly meeting is this Sunday (27th June) at the CP, 7pm.
It’s Doctor Who finale weekend and I’m sure lots of you want to come along and say what you think.
No… oh well the usual question of who’s coming is valid again and there’s a little poll for a quick tally this time too. ![]()
Our next meeting will be the regular monthly meeting on 4th July (yes I know its next week but my brain says monthly… :p ) at the usual place, usual time and then our next meeting will be…
…18th July. You’ve asked for fortnightly meetings you’ve got them. The additional meetings are designed to start us doing other things but we’ll get to that in more detail as we go along.
So put this date in your diary, 18th July, Crystal Palace, 7pm.
Cheers the noo

Don’t Miss Tom Baker’s First Scottish Doctor Who Convention in Almost 20 Years!
14/03/2010 by Alan McWhan.
Hi everyone!
Sorry I haven’t got round to blogging for a while. I’ve been busily beavering away, making sure by the time May comes around we give you all the best Doctor Who convention ever seen in Scotland!
And I’m now quite remarkably excited to be able to announce our 11th guest for this year’s event.
Quite probably the most popular producer in the history of Doctor Who, the man behind the first “Golden Age” of Doctor Who, none other than Philip Hinchcliffe has kindly agreed to join us in May for a rare convention appearance, subject to work and personal commitments.
Philip was producer of the show between 1974 and 1977 and oversaw Tom’s first three years as the Doctor, producing some of the show’s most iconic and popular episodes during that time.
Our guest list, subject to work and personal commitments, is now;
- Tom Baker - The Fourth Doctor
- Colin Baker - The Sixth Doctor
- Sylvester McCoy - The Seventh Doctor
- Sophie Aldred - Ace
- John Leeson - The voice of K9
- Richard Franklin - Captain Mike Yates
- Philip Hinchcliffe - Producer, 1974-1977
- Andrew Cartmel - Script Editor, 1987-1989
- Tom Goodman-Hill - The Reverend Golightly / The Vespiform (The Unicorn and the Wasp)
- Michael Cochrane - Lord Cranleigh (Black Orchid) - Redvers Fenn-Cooper (Ghost Light)
- Prentis Hancock - Reporter (Spearhead from Space) - Vaber (Planet of the Daleks) - Salamar (Planet of Evil) - Captain of the Guard (The Ribos Operation)
This event marks Tom Baker’s first Doctor Who convention in Scotland since 1993 and will be the first time a Scottish convention has ever had three Doctors on the same guest list!
Add in a rare convention appearance by one of the show’s most popular producers, Philip Hinchcliffe, and a Doctor Who convention debut for Tom Goodman-Hill, along with many huge names from throughout the history of Doctor Who, and it’s an event not to be missed!
Tickets are still available from www.glasgowwho.co.uk/aog4.html and the sooner you buy yours, the sooner we can tell how many more guests we can go for… and how big they’re going to be!
I think we have a truly great guest list shaping up here… it would be a shame for any of you to miss out!
Cheers!
Al.

From the Keyboard of Barry- 24th November 2009
24/11/2009 by Barry.

Well,I know it’s been a while but it is time for a little update from me. Since the 15th November there has been so much Doctor Who I’ve not even had time to breathe.
The Waters of Mars:- Well it was better than Planet of the Dead and I actually liked the last 15 minutes unlike most of the others on the forum.
Dreamland:- Good so far and Georgia Moffett has certainly been taking American Accent lessons from her mother
Army of Guests:- The “Four Who Rule” met up last night (23rd November 2009) and apart from celebrating the birthday of our favourite show we have started on plans for AOG4. Yes, it’s public now and the publicity machine has started but I’m gonna say no more at the moment as it’s in the VERY early stages.
So, after a quiet Summer it’s about to start in earnest including The End of Time at Christmas and I’ll be there on December 6th so I hope to see you all there.

All for Sarah`s Wedding…
29/10/2009 by admin.
step we gaily on we go, heel for heel and toe for toe, arm in arm and row on row, all for Sarah`s Wedding…!
Well, today`s the day - the SJA story we`ve all been waiting for, the one where The Doctor himself finally appears! Hooray!
Prisoner of the Judoon was a good opener, with a great turn from Lis as Sarah/Androvax.[Much better than “Eldrad Must Live!”]
The Mad Woman In The Attic was a pretty plot-lite story I thought but a nice riff on the “not aliens are bad” idea. Great Make-Up/Prosthetic job on Eve & nice to see Lis` husband Brian Miller again. But of course it was the Flashbacks that really got the attention - Time Warrior, Planet of the Spiders, Five Doctors, Hand of Fear - Hooray for flashbacks!
Only downside to the whole thing in the run-up to today`s TX is the spoilerific nature of the trailers, revealing The Trickster as the villain. But then again, it`s not exactly rocket science is it, I mean every story so far that`s had “Sarah Jane” in the title has involved The Trickster!
The Missus was well put out to discover old Tricksy was back [she finds his facial deficiencies a biti creepy] so minus marks all round for the Beeb in our house.
REALLY looking forward to today`s ep & tomorrow`s conclusion. And don`t forget both episodes are repeated on CBBC [ 613 on Sky] at 17.15 on Saturday. I`ll be watching. Will you?
The TARDIS In The Attic - oh yes!

Well it’s here,
The new Doctor Who logo has now been put up on the BBC Doctor Who Website.
First opinions? Meh. It’s ok and it’ll will grow on me but I’m not going to sulk in a corner and then write a hate filled letter to Mister Moffat like some were suggesting on the forum :). It kinda smacks of the Dark Dimension logo that was punted for the failed movie attempt in the 90’s especially the TARDIS motif.
Moving onto the forum business and I’ve decided to fit in with the other Mods and my user name is now Barry Stanton and not deanstructor like it was. It seems a little odd being one of the four guys being the only one with a real internet user name. I’ve always used that user name for over 10 years online but it’s just not a suitable one on the forum anymore.
We have a bigger clan every month at the meetings and hello and welcome to Gregor for turning up. I got the chance to speak to Pauline and Christine more this month and hopefully next month I’ll get the chance for a chat Gregor. That’s if the meeting is November 1st as Clarkie and the Aberdeen Sci-Fi guys are due to come down so our meeting may change to accomodate their visit. Bryan will tell you when it’s confirmed here, on the website and the Forum
Oh, BTW to all who are asking. My Birthday turned out to be a crap one.
Not all of them can be good I suppose…
Till we next meet…

THE MIGHTY DWM 200
17/09/2009 by admin.
Well, what do you reckon to that then?
Is The Caves of Androzani really The Best Doctor Who Story Ever?
And more importantly, is it really better than the Runner-up - Blink?
The last time DWM did a poll like this was 1998 and I`ve posted various lists over at the Forum but if you check them out you`ll see that aside from Androzani & City of Death [both of which are Up 2 places] all the rest of the Top Seven are the same stories in the same order!
As for the New Series, Top Story is Blink, followed by The Empty Child.
The NS Top Ten are evenly split between The Moff & RTD with one each for Rob Shearman & Paul Cornell.
Go check out the thread in The Console Room section of the Forum now!
Be interesting to see what changes there are when DWM does all this again in another ten years - if we`re all still here, that is…

This Mortal Coil…
15/09/2009 by admin.
So sad to hear today of the deaths of Ian Cuthbertson and Keith Floyd. I know the latter wasn`t in Doctor Who but he was, like Crazy Tom, one of those few people to whom the term “Great British Eccentric” could accurately be applied. I remember his Floyd On… programmes clearly and he blazed the trail for all the “celebrity chefs” who followed him. But he was the first one to make cooking into entertainment and the folks loved him for it. Without him there would be no Two Fat Ladies or Ready Steady Cook, so Gawd Bless Ya Floyd and thanks for all the fun you gave us!
I met him once in Tesco in Didcot [he was living nearby then]. I was working in Wines and Spirits at the time and made sure I steered clear of him in case he asked me something! As I recall he bought The Lion King on DVD and it was comical in extremis as the personell manager insisted on getting the disc for him herself! Oh, the power of celebrity!
Cuthbertson was of course, wonderful as Garron in Ribos Operation, but many may remember him from Children of the Stones or Budgie and it`s sequel Charles Endell Esq. And the very end of Survivors. A great actor and a sad loss.
And speaking of actors, our cracking Nabil Shaban event is only a week on Sunday - if you haven`t already, get those tickets NOW!

From the Keyboard of Barry, Weeks 12 and 13
08/09/2009 by Barry.
Well, it’s started.
First up can I saying hello to Louie, Pauline and Christine and thank them for coming to the meeting. Sorry I didn’t get the chance to speak to you Louie but hopefully I will be able to chat more next month.
It’s nice to have new people and it just makes for a different atmosphere to the meetings and I hope this is the start of things to come.
Oh, the Fan Fiction section of the forum has to get into swing again and I’ve totally forgot about it! That’s what happens when other commitments take over and to be perfectly honest I do feel a little guilty.
As I said to Christine on Sunday the group isn’t just a monthly meeting, we have an online presence with the Forum, The Blog, Bebo, Twitter, MySpace, Meetup, Facebook and the website of course. Just because we’re a Glasgow based group doesn’t meet we have to be local in our activity, it’s something we should be getting involved with all the time all through the month and at the end of the day it will enrich the meetings help our events. We have a good group of people who are passionate about Doctor Who at the meetings and lets make a move use of all online sites we are at things and raise our profile, raise our self esteem and ultimately raise the enjoyment of the group.
Fan Fiction mods, I’ll be emailing you shortly…

From the Keyboard of Barry Weeks 9-11
24/08/2009 by Barry.
I’m getting slack,
It’s not for the want of trying but you try, pizza delivering, podcasting, website building and trying to find the time to watch the Randomiser story every week, it’s a busy time. Never mind, September should be good for me do more things though.
Well the whole Shabang (that’s my intended spelling Alan, :op) starts of for us Glasgow Who guys on Saturday (29th August) with our little stall at collectormania. Unfortunatley I can’t be there to help sell tickets for Nabil’s little visit 27th September but I will be at the meeting the following Sunday (6th September). I wonder what Bryan’s gonna be doing to excite us this time.
Going onto Who things, i must say I’m pleased to see that Nicola Bryant has great support of us mentioning us in DWM this month but there is one thing that hs annoyed me this week,”Doctor Who’s Greatest Moments,” Is it me or does it seem like the Doctor Who Confidential team are running out of ideas. It’s the first time I’ve almost stopped watching something Who related in ages. It was dire.
Oh, maybe I should of put a rant up on the forum. I might just do that.
Till next time
Barry
