DW Experience Trip

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

Hey Guys,

If you weren’t at the meeting last night or if you were but weren’t listening, then we are looking at going to the Doctor Who Experience in London the weekend of July 8-10

Travelling down there is still being looked at but I’ve been doing a little research on the Greyhound buses. They depart from Buchannan Bus Station about 10pm and arrive in Victoria, London about 7 in the morning and the prices will be not more than £40 return. They only allow 3 months in advance booking online but if we most of us go that option we could be getting a return for as little as £20 each. Several people are already thinking of making their own way down so we will arrange to meet up in London in case you want to make your own travel arrangements.

Ticket for the exhibition will be no more than £20 and we can get a discount for a block booking but we’re thinking the Saturday.

We were also thinking of staying overnight on the Saturday, making a weekend of it, and returning on the Sunday night. So I’ve been looking at the cost of rooms. On the Sunday we are thinking of doing a Doctor Who themed tourist day. If everyone is in favour there is even a company that does this, although we may have a better time making it for ourselves.

If we get twin rooms and share then the big hoteliers (Premier Inn, Travelodge, Holiday Inn, Hilton) would be about £90 per room WITHOUT breakfast. So I’ve also looked at the B and B option. For double rooms per person and the average price is £45 per person per night, including brekkie.

Most of the places I’ve looked are in the Kensington area which is no more than 3 miles from the Olympia, where the Doctor Who Experience is.

It looks like a spend of about £90 plus whatever food and drink you decide.

We will leave all the travel arrangements up to yourselves but we want to get enough people to commit so we can get a discount for a block booking on the exhibition. To this end if you are interested we would need to get deposits by all concerned of £10 by the first April meeting so we can get numbers and get booking, as the sooner we book the cheaper it would be.

Let me know what you think

June 27th Meeting and Beyond

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

The last proper weekly meeting is this Sunday (27th June) at the CP, 7pm.
It’s Doctor Who finale weekend and I’m sure lots of you want to come along and say what you think.
No… oh well the usual question of who’s coming is valid again and there’s a little poll for a quick tally this time too. :)

Our next meeting will be the regular monthly meeting on 4th July (yes I know its next week but my brain says monthly… :p ) at the usual place, usual time and then our next meeting will be…

…18th July. You’ve asked for fortnightly meetings you’ve got them. The additional meetings are designed to start us doing other things but we’ll get to that in more detail as we go along.

So put this date in your diary, 18th July, Crystal Palace, 7pm.

Cheers the noo

AOG4 Logo

Well,I know it’s been a while but it is time for a little update from me. Since the 15th November there has been so much Doctor Who I’ve not even had time to breathe.
The Waters of Mars
:- Well it was better than Planet of the Dead and I actually liked the last 15 minutes unlike most of the others on the forum.
Dreamland
:- Good so far and Georgia Moffett has certainly been taking American Accent lessons from her mother
:)
Army of Guests
:- The “Four Who Rule” met up last night (23rd November 2009) and apart from celebrating the birthday of our favourite show we have started on plans for AOG4. Yes, it’s public now and the publicity machine has started but I’m gonna say no more at the moment as it’s in the VERY early stages.
So, after a quiet Summer it’s about to start in earnest including The End of Time at Christmas
and I’ll be there on December 6th so I hope to see you all there.

Well it’s here,

The new Doctor Who logo has now been put up on the BBC Doctor Who Website.

First opinions? Meh. It’s ok and it’ll will grow on me but I’m not going to sulk in a corner and then write a hate filled letter to Mister Moffat like some were suggesting on the forum :). It kinda smacks of the Dark Dimension logo that was punted for the failed movie attempt in the 90’s especially the TARDIS motif.

Moving onto the forum business and I’ve decided to fit in with the other Mods and my user name is now Barry Stanton and not deanstructor like it was. It seems a little odd being one of the four guys being the only one with a real internet user name. I’ve always used that user name for over 10 years online but it’s just not a suitable one on the forum anymore.

We have a bigger clan every month at the meetings and hello and welcome to Gregor for turning up. I got the chance to speak to Pauline and Christine more this month and hopefully next month I’ll get the chance for a chat Gregor. That’s if the meeting is November 1st as Clarkie and the Aberdeen Sci-Fi guys are due to come down so our meeting may change to accomodate their visit. Bryan will tell you when it’s confirmed here, on the website and the Forum

Oh, BTW to all who are asking. My Birthday turned out to be a crap one.

Not all of them can be good I suppose…

Till we next meet…

Forum Gremlins

Thursday, October 1st, 2009

For those of you who have been trying to get onto the Forum for the past day or so, there are some gremlins that have transported themselves into our server and it’s taking a little time to get the blighters out of it. We’re using all the ray guns and sonic screwdrivers we can find and we’ll let you know when everything is back up and running…

Well, it’s started.

First up can I saying hello to Louie, Pauline and Christine and thank them for coming to the meeting. Sorry I didn’t get the chance to speak to you Louie but hopefully I will be able to chat more next month.
It’s nice to have new people and it just makes for a different atmosphere to the meetings and I hope this is the start of things to come.
Oh, the Fan Fiction section of the forum has to get into swing again and I’ve totally forgot about it! That’s what happens when other commitments take over and to be perfectly honest I do feel a little guilty.
As I said to Christine on Sunday the group isn’t just a monthly meeting, we have an online presence with the Forum, The Blog, Bebo, Twitter, MySpace, Meetup, Facebook and the website of course. Just because we’re a Glasgow based group doesn’t meet we have to be local in our activity, it’s something we should be getting involved with all the time all through the month and at the end of the day it will enrich the meetings help our events. We have a good group of people who are passionate about Doctor Who at the meetings and lets make a move use of all online sites we are at things and raise our profile, raise our self esteem and ultimately raise the enjoyment of the group.

Fan Fiction mods, I’ll be emailing you shortly…

I’m getting slack,

It’s not for the want of trying but you try, pizza delivering, podcasting, website building and trying to find the time to watch the Randomiser story every week, it’s a busy time. Never mind, September should be good for me do more things though.

Well the whole Shabang (that’s my intended spelling Alan, :op) starts of for us Glasgow Who guys on Saturday (29th August) with our little stall at collectormania. Unfortunatley I can’t be there to help sell tickets for Nabil’s little visit 27th September but I will be at the meeting the following Sunday (6th September). I wonder what Bryan’s gonna be doing to excite us this time.

Going onto Who things, i must say I’m pleased to see that Nicola Bryant has great support of us mentioning us in DWM this month but there is one thing that hs annoyed me this week,”Doctor Who’s Greatest Moments,” Is it me or does it seem like the Doctor Who Confidential team are running out of ideas. It’s the first time I’ve almost stopped watching something Who related in ages. It was dire.

Oh, maybe I should of put a rant up on the forum. I might just do that.

Till next time

What a brilliant Sunday (2nd August)

After wiping the sleep from my eyes I took the bus into the city centre just after 8 and typically it looked like it was going to rain. I took my umbrella and typically I never used it.
Just before 9 I arrived at the Crystal Palace where Alan and John Hughes were already waiting for our lift, Rintu.

Rintu turned up just after 9 and we were in the city of Edinburgh just before 10 and trying to figure out how to get to the Illicit Still. Alan can never remember the way and everyone else was just as bad!

When we did arrive, after going up the road Alan ignored and told us not to go up in the first place, we all arrived at the venue just after 10. Katy Manning was sitting talking to Martin near the front door and she was greeting everyone who came in. Just after 10.30 we all sat down with our coffees (unfortunately drink couldn’t be served until 12.30) and started Katy came onto the stage.

What a witty woman. I have never known someone to be so engaging and she has so many anecdotes of her life and her time on Doctor Who. I never knew she was friends with Liza Minnelli and she’s such a versatile voice artist. She certainly isn’t anything like Jo Grant’s perceived naivety and under all the scattiness there is a very underestimated and intelligent woman. A joy to listen to and I would like to once again on behalf of the group thank Martin and the team in Edinburgh for a brilliant few hours.

Alan also announced in Edinburgh Nabil Shaban will be with us in Glasgow on 27th September and he’s already posted a lengthy blog for this so I’ll skip over it.

Photos

Well, what about the photos for the new series filming. Is it me or is Karen Gillan just stunning in whatever she wears. There is even a photo of a recurring guest star but I’ll say no more just now, it’s really a spoiler still.

Forum

The Randomiser is swinging into action and the Fan Fiction section of the Forum is still being looked at but our concentration will be on Nabil’s event between now and September 27th so any new things for the forum will probably be put on the back burner.

Website

The website as you already know crashed on Monday (27th July) and didn’t come back up until the following day. We are working behind the scenes to improve this and prevent such a major server failure from happening again. Using a hammer and spade just doesn’t do the job in fixing server quickly nowadays…

There are mumblings that the gremlins of the group are doing something. I’ll let our events gremlin say more…

Till next time I’ll leave you a picture of Rintu, Me and Alan with Katy. Guess which one has had the drink!

Site issues on Monday 27th and Tuesday 28th July 2009

Friday, July 31st, 2009

As you may know earlier in the week the site and the blog went down.

After many hours using a hammer and spade trying to kickstart the website we got it back up a day later.

The forum has a redirect link and this didn’t work either but if there is any issues in future there is a backdoor link. http://glasgowwho.phpbbhosts.co.uk. Keep a note of it for the future just in case.

This message is also on the forum.
