From the Keyboard of Barry- Week 2

Sunday, June 21st, 2009

It just keeps getting better and better.

Well, you know I was saying I hoped that more local groups would have their own sub forums. Mark from the Manx Anorax group contacted me asking if it was OK to setup a own thread for his group. I suggested one better and like the Taysiders, the Manx group now have their own sub forum under the World Community Section. I’ve still been posting and keeping an eye on threads in Gallifrey Base, Outpost Who and Outpost Gallifrey. I’ve also joined the Doctor Who World forum. I’m gonna put up a link on our website to theirs after they contacted us with a request to do so.
You’ll have noticed that some of the users on the forum have become moderators. They’re special mods and all I can say is that “The Randomiser” that Alan has been promoting, cryptically, is part of it.

Finally, a couple of congrats are in order, both for Bryan McCormack. He’s been working to try and get some Scottish users of Outpost Gallifrey to come over and he’s done quite well to get what he has so far. Also Bryan is the first person to post over 100 times.  Great job Bryan!

Anyway, thanks for posting and keep doing so, there’s plenty to talk about.

Barry

All dates are of course, subject to change.

Except the really important one, which is the first Sunday in the month!

War Games DVD [Easter Egg Spoilers!]

Wednesday, June 17th, 2009

Taking a break from contacting everyone [all 168 of `em!] on OG who lists their location as Scotland, I popped across to Eye Of Horus, as you do. But only really for advance DVD reviews, the rest of the site is pretty dull and a bit hard to navigate to my mind..

And what do I find but a review for the upcoming 3-disc release of The War Games! Hooray! [in best RTD voice] I`ve pre-ordered mine from Play.com for £12.99!

Now I dunno about you lot, but I`m really looking forward to this release and not just for the usual canonicity reasons. I genuinely like it and even at ten episodes it doesn`t drag at all. OK, I must agree with Alan and admit that you could  watch episodes 1,2,9 & 10 and not really miss out on anything but the journey wouldn`t be nearly half as much fun!

Funny thing is, I`d been watching TWG for several eps before I realised that the bloke playing the War Chief was Mr Meeker from Rentaghost! Why does that actor recognition thing [see DWM 403 for details] only work one way - ie spotting actors from Who in other things and not actors from other things in Who?

Weird. Anyway, it`s a pretty good review and helpful if you`re swithering about whether to get this or Delta And The Bananamen with your pocket money. But if you like hunting for Easter Eggs, be warned that their content is described, though not their actual location on the three discs.

Massive Spoiler Alert! BEWARE!!!

Tuesday, June 16th, 2009

I don`t know about you, but I`m kinda ambivalent about spoilers.

Part of me wants to enjoy the episodes free of prior knowledge, the other part of me wants to know everything it can. I suppose it`s the actor in me, wanting a backstage pass.

Anyway, as far as David`s Final Story is concerned I really made an effort this time to stay spoiler-free and was doing quite well up until the point where RTD himself told us that Bernard Cribbins was in it.

I mean, the very man who warns us continually to avoid spoilers in DWM, goes and drops a huge one himself, without any prompting. I suppose he was so excited he couldn`t help himself, poor love.

Anyway, after that I gave up and now I don`t give a Bandril`s Bum about spoilers. It`s the same information, just a bit early that`s all.

So linked to below is something I found about five minutes ago [10.30am].

Now I don`t know what other people`s position is on spoilers [Barry, maybe we could clear that up?] so I don`t want to ruin anybody`s Christmas unless, like me, they`ve given up trying. For that reason, I`ve posted this here on the Blog instead of the Forum, on the assumption that less people will read it!

So, below is a link to a Spoiler for DT`s last story.

If you want to see it, click on it.

You have been warned!

Are you sure? Ok, here it is:

And remember, I did warn you!

From the Keyboard of Barry- Week 1

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

Wow! What a first week.

There has been a lot going on in the forum and the site has been getting a good number of hits this week.
There has also been a good chunk of guys who have come over from the Yahoo! Group and there’s still a lot more of you to come over so join ASAP.
You’ll have noticed a few other things on the forum of particular interest.
The TARDIS in Tayside group have their own sub-forum and I’ve been posting on their threads in Outpost Gallifrey and on the new Gallifrey Base Forum. This generosity has been reciprocated by a front page plug for our site on theirs. Hello to Alan and the gang and they are the first group to get their very own sub forum.  I hope that there will be a few groups residing in their own sub forums over the next few weeks making the forum truly an internet community.
I’ve made the first steps in building links with Highland Who. Hello Liam and the gang and I hope your first meeting goes well next month and sorry I won’t be able to come. I’ve even posted on their forum saying hello.
Clarkie from the Aberdeen Sci Fi Association posted a hello on the forum and he is fortuitously in Glasgow at the next meeting and will be joining us. As a gesture of good faith he’ll be bringing some Merchandise for us to raffle. It might be an idea to bring your pennies as we might raffle some stuff on the night!
Finally the Manx Anorax headed by Mark Owen have also joined the forum and are posting. Already we have a bit of a multi-club forum going on and you never know we’ll be changing the forum’s name next!

All in all it’s been a busy week and with the Reviews and Fan Fiction sections of the site and forum about to rev up there’s a lot more on the way.

Keep posting and keep the momentum going: :)

Cheers

Well, that was our first week!

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

And what a week it`s been!

MEMBERSHIP

Over thirty members have been added to the Forum, which is a great. Thank you to all of you for your support and enthusiasm for the site. There are some great threads underway and I`ve put up some polls for you to choose your Favourite story for each of the Doctors. So get voting and keep posting - especially the ten of you who haven`t made your first post yet - come on in, the water`s lovely. And we don`t bite, honest!

On the membership front, there are over 160 users on Outpost Gallifrey who say they are from Scotland and I`ll be contacting them all, inviting them to join us here during the coming week. But numbers aren`t everything of course. In my view, having 50 active members is much better than having 200 members, 150 of whom are lurkers. Which is where you all come in!

DVD

The rest of the month sees Delta and the Bananamen and Planet o` the Deid out on DVD. I`m not in any great hurry to buy either of them to be honest and will probably wait until they`re on Play.com for a fiver!

DWM

The next issue of DWM comes out a week on Thursday - did anybody else forget to send in their Mighty 200 survey, rating every story? I did. By the time I remembered Alan and I were in the pub and by then  it was too late…

NEXT MEETING

Plans are underway for Something To Do at our next meeting, which is only 3 weeks away today. More details nearer to the time. Clarkie from Aberdeen will be visiting us so please do all you can to make him feel welcome, especially as he`s bringing us a goodie bag! What a nice man! If you`re reading this Clarkie, you should have got my email by now. Looking forward to seeing you and thank you once again.

Ciao For Now,

A Funeral For A Timelord

Sunday, June 14th, 2009

So this morning I`m checking my emails and catching up with the latest goings-on in the online Whoniverse when I come across THIS:

http://io9.com/5283524/a-funeral-for-a-time-lord

A very touching story and how great of his friends and family to organise something like that, right down to a Tardis-coffin. Nice to know that, even in death, someone can inspire people.

When I go, I`d like to a send-off like that please.

Condolances to Seb`s family and friends.

Sunday June 7th Meeting

Monday, June 8th, 2009

First of all, thanks to all of you who made the effort to turn out last night to both say “au revoir” to Alan and to find out where he, Rintu, Barry & myself want to take the group next.

I thought it was a really good, positive meeting and I`m really enthused about where we`re going now as a group and the level of support we got from you guys, thanks you all.

As you`ll recall I went round the table last night trying to find out what YOU want from our monthly get-togethers. I`ve got lots of ideas for fun things we could do but it`s really important that we do the stuff you guys are up for. That`s the whole reason for turning out after all and we got some really good suggestions, some of which I had already thought of, some I hadn`t.

I`m going to take those ideas and suggestions away and try and come up with a programme of things we can do between now and when “Waters of Mars” airs.

The two most popular suggestions seemed to be Screenings and a Quiz so I`ll be looking at doing those two first. As I mentioned last night we do have a potential venue lined up for the Screenings but we still need to organise possible dates and availability so stay tuned for futher news on that.

Our next meeting will be on Sunday July 5th, same time and place. Looking forward to seeing you all again then!
